Baby Massage for Parent and Baby

Baby Massage for Parent and Baby

The birth of a baby is an extremely significant life event for all family members especially mother and baby. Between mother and baby there is an unconditional love. It is through loving, caressing, tactile stimulation and communication that the infant learns that they are loved. We must speak to their skins.

Baby massage is when a parent or primary carer lovingly strokes or holds their baby. Using a high quality non-fragranced vegetable oil, soothing holds and rhythmic strokes are given on each area of baby’s body, following a sequence which has been developed over many years. The massage offers a wonderful experience and a special time to communicate both verbally and non-verbally with babies, so that they feel loved, valued and respected.

Baby massage has been a longstanding parenting tradition in many cultures, such as in India and Africa, and has been introduced to the western world during the last 30 years, gaining in popularity in the UK since the late 1990’s.

Four of the main areas of benefit include:

  • Interaction and bonding
  • Relaxation
  • Relief
  • Stimulation

Benefits for your baby

  • Helping your baby to feel securely attached
  • Helping your baby to feel more loved, valued and respected
  • Reduced crying and emotional distress
  • Increased levels of relaxation and longer sleep
  • Development of body awareness and coordination
  • Relief from wind, colic, constipation and teething discomfort

Benefits for you

  • Feeling closer to your baby
  • Gaining a deeper understanding of your baby’s behaviour, crying and body language
  • Providing an enjoyable opportunity for you to spend one-to-one time with your baby
  • Feeling the relaxing effects of giving your baby a massage
  • Increased confidence in your ability to care for and nurture your baby
  • Learning a life-long parenting skill

Studies from around the world have shown that infant massage reduces post-natal depression and can improve mother/baby relationships.

Some feedback from my recent baby massage group includes:

‘My baby really loves this class it has drastically improved her sleep which I am so happy with, she responds so well to it, she is gradually letting me massage her for longer and longer periods of time’

‘I really enjoyed the class, I loved how relaxing it was, and I loved meeting other parents and their babies, it was such wonderful time for me and my baby’.

‘I would highly recommend this class, I really loved every minute of it, it was so lovely to feel a part of a group, I loved meeting other new mums who were in the same situation as me’.

‘My baby and I thoroughly enjoyed Laura’s class. It was wonderful time out, just for us. The baby massage techniques I learned have been so helpful at home, in particular before bath time. My baby hated the bath, but when I did 10 minutes of baby massage beforehand it really put her at ease. No more screaming sessions in the tub, which is amazing. Last night we even got a giggle! Thank you Laura’.
