The Little Steps to Big School Project is designed to help you and your child make the transition from preschool to primary school.
Little Steps to Big School is operated through preschools located in the geographic areas The Genesis Programme works in across County Louth. There are approximately 35 preschool providers participating in The Little Steps to Big School Programme. If your child is at one of these preschools they will be part of the Little Steps to Big School programme.
All participating preschools receive a box of practical resources. These resources are tools to help your child to understand what the transition to primary school is all about. They encourage your child to ask questions and express their views. These resources are used with the children to help them to prepare for big school.

Additionally, the NCCA (National Council for Curriculum Assessment) have devised ‘Mo Scéal’ which consists of a range of materials supporting children’s move from preschool to primary school. The NCCA worked with preschools and primary schools to develop the Mo Scéal: Moving from Preschool to Primary templates. Mo Scéal means ‘my story’ and the templates help to tell the story of the childs learning and development. This information will be shared with parents and, with their consent, with the primary school. The templates are a resource which preschools and schools might find helpful as they collaborate in supporting young children and their families at the key transition. These templates are included in our ‘Little Steps to Big School’ pack for services and schools.

Oscar the Ostrich finds it difficult to communicate his feelings to others and sometimes sticks his head in the sand. Use Oscar to help children learn to solve problems and not hide from them. Children who are struggling with the transition to either Early Learning and Care Centres or Big School will be able to relate to Oscar and how he is feeling. Oscar is available to all Early Learning and Care Centres participating in the Little Steps to Big School Programme.
