First Day Tips

The Night Before

  • Lay out uniforms, bags and if possible prepare lunches the night before.

In the morning

  • Get up early so that you and your child are not rushing
  • Ensure you and your child/children have a nutritious breakfast
  • Enjoy some family time at breakfast – talk to your child about the day ahead and all the fun things they will be doing.

At the school

  • Get to the school a short time before the bell rings
  • Strike the balance between being at school long enough to allow your child to adjust to their new setting but short enough to ensure that your child does not expect you to stay.

Manage your emotions

The first day of school can be an emotional time for many parents.  It is important to avoid allowing your emotions to rub off on your child.  If they see you upset, then they will instantly want to stay with you. This will intensify their anxiety.

If you know other parents that have children starting school on the same day arrange to go for coffee or for a walk.  As a parent you will also need support and self-care is essential.
